20 Dec Game Of Thrones Destinations: Explore The Spectacular Scenery Of Iceland
In the Game of Thrones, winter scenes were shot throughout various locations in Iceland. For many people, this was the first glimpse into the natural beauty of this northern country.
Game of Thrones Iceland travel
For those couples who love nature and the outdoors, it is hard to imagine a more exotic and inspiring place to honeymoon or vacation than Iceland. In the spring to late summer months the weather is refreshing but not cold, and even during the winter months, the temperature is not as cold as many people assume. Typical summer weather is just below sixty degrees, and winters are at or just below freezing in most locations.
This is a rugged area, with most of the cities located on the coast. The island offers a wealth of parks, mountains and, of course, dormant volcanoes and lava flows. The sheer ruggedness of the landscape is immediately evident, but so is the natural beauty. It is hard to imagine a more perfect location for anyone wanting to experience northern fauna and flora as well as spend time in the world-class city of Reykjavik.
To see the filming spots in Iceland, plan a few days to visit them all. These are not remote locations and there are tours that can provide transportation to the area as well as guided walking trips.
Thingvellir National Park
In the series, this was where the White Walker Army was found, and it is also the location used in some of the shots as areas beyond The Wall. Just east of Reykjavik, this is actually a rift valley that was made from the shifting of two tectonic plates. The rugged cliffs and fissures make this easy to see.
An historic area, used for farming, in the Game of Thrones the Thjorsárdalur Valley became the area where the Wildings attacked. This is a perfect location to see volcanic terrain.
Ruins of Dimmuborgir
Watchers of the series will recognize Castle Black as they approach the ruins. These are all naturally formed from lava, but they eerily resemble the ruins of a castle that has long since been abandoned. There are several very well-maintained trails throughout the area that allow visitors to choose the level of trekking difficulty.
In the series, this is the area portrayed as north of the wall. It is famous for the structures throughout the area that were created by a lava eruption some 2300 years ago. There are some underground caverns or spaces, most notably those used in season three with Ygritte and Jon Snow, but the entire area offers truly striking and dramatic landscape.
For a honeymoon, anniversary or just a romantic getaway, Iceland offers a unique combination of rugged natural beauty and amazing people that will always stand out as a memorable trip.
